mehndi art

by Colleen

One of the things I really enjoy about my job as a makeup artist is that I sometimes it takes me to places or events that I might not otherwise have experienced. Case in point, a lavish Indian wedding.

I was hired to do makeup for an Indian wedding a couple of weeks ago and I was delighted to also participate in the Mehndi party. A Mehndi party is traditionally held a few days before the wedding at the bride’s home and both the bride and groom attend. The bride is decorated in intricate designs of Henna from the tips of her fingers to almost her elbows and from her toes to half way up her calf. It is said that hidden in the intricate patterns are the initials of the groom and he in turn must find them! (sounds exciting) The mood was festive with music and delicious Indian food. There were Indian dancers and singers who performed while the bride was getting her Mehndi applied.

As a makeup artist, I found the colors of the clothing (the bride wore an exquisite hot pink traditional Indian outfit) and the Mehndi designs just gorgeous and inspiring. Many female guests also have the Mehndi applied on the backs of their hands, their palms or the back of the shoulder. Once the henna has dried, you wash off the excess and you are left with a gorgeous rich reddish brown color. Depending on your skin, it may last a couple of weeks.

Of course I partook in the tradition!

It’s like a tattoo but without the commitment ( it only lasts a couple of weeks). It’s the perfect summer jewelry!

And you, have you ever tried Mehndi?

  1. I must say I feel pretty jealous reading your post. I am in love with anything Indian for almost whole my life and I wish to have a proper henna tattoo for a long time now. I even bought henna, but it did not work, must have been some wrong kind or something.

I hope you enjoyed the event. And yes you look great in the clothes and with your fresh mehndi.
