Grey hairs in your eyebrows?! Put down the tweezers! Yes it happens and just like that first grey hair you find on your head, resist the urge to pluck it out. Brows can thin naturally with age so we need to keep all the hairs we still have! With the trend towards a fuller brow there are ways to fake some face framing arches that are guaranteed to take years off a face.
MAKEUP
The best way to fill in any sparse areas or gaps is to use a brow powder or eyeshadow. Using a pencil is ok as well but can look harsher which will not be as natural or youthful looking (I am personally not a fan of overly drawn in eyebrows, sorry Instagram).
If you have kept some grey in your hair it is best to mix a neutral brown or ash brown (light or dark) with a bit of grey. Any warm browns can look fake in an eyebrow if the hair has some grey in it. If you dye your hair than choose a shadow that matches well with your brows and hair. For example, if you lighten your hair you may want to add some lighter tones to your brows for a more natural look (this works well with tinted brow gel which I will discuss next). There are many great eyebrow powder palette kits like this one from Clarins with several shades that you can mix to get the perfect shade for you. Brow gels are like mascaras for eyebrows. They have similar wands and work well after filling in with brow powder to keep them in place, and add a bit of color. These are perfect at hiding little grey brow hairs. If you have lightened your hair choose one a little lighter than your natural brow shade. You can even cheat a fuller brow by coloring the little peach fuzz hairs at the ends or underneath the brow. I like Eyeko’s brow gel, Anastasia’s tinted brow gel and Benefit’s Gimme Brow.
EYEBROW TINTING
For a more permanent solution there is eyebrow tinting. This is the same as giving your hair a semi permanent hair color, and lasts from four to six weeks. It is best to leave this to a pro as the dyes used for eyebrows are different from the ones used on the hair (hair dyes can cause blindness if it accidentally drops in the eye). The pros usually use a vegetable based dye and can guide you on the correct shade. This is a great solution to camouflage greys or if you have completely changed your hair color. The tint can also add dimension to the eyebrows by tinting the little blonde hairs that have just started to grow near the brows.
