How to find your perfect red lip

Red lips are like jewelry, they can be the perfect accessory that immediately elevates your look. Like a statement necklace or a pair of earrings that you can count on to bring glamour to even a simple outfit (just take a look at J.Crew). With a red lip you can pair back on the rest of your makeup and let them be the focal point. I’ve always loved a red lip and even chose to wear one for my wedding! (Chanel Lune Rousse!). It is a makeup item that every woman should try and every woman can wear! Once you’ve found your perfect red lip you will know you can count on it as your go to makeup accessory.

When I am applying a red lip for myself, I like to apply it straight from the tube then press my lips together and smoosh it all around. Then to define the edges and stop the color from feathering I will trace around the edges with my red lip liner. (try to find one that matches your perfect red) At this point I blot with a tissue and then apply another layer for a longer lasting application. I prefer to apply a lip balm afterwards because the red color needs to be applied to bare lips to adhere like a stain. You can top with a gloss in the center of the lips but I prefer a more matte finish.

RED LIP TIPS

For those of you who feel they have thin lips, try a dot of a more coral red in the center of the lips for a 3D effect.
Pale skin looks best with a true red with bluish undertones, like Mac’s Ruby Woo
Warmer skin tones look great with more orangey red hues, my pick Mac Lady Danger
Dark skin can get away with brighter reds and also true reds, like Nars Red Lizard for a bright one or MAC Russian Red for a true red.
For the red lip uninitiated, try a tinted lip balm like one from Burt’s bees or a sheer lip stain and just press it on with your fingers.
To tone down a red lip, apply a light pink hue over top.
Apply an eyeshadow primer to the edges of the lips to stop feathering.
Cool toned red lipstick makes teeth look whiter!
