The supermodels are back!

THE SUPERMODELS ARE BACK!

Have you seen the new Balmain campaign for spring 2016? It features three of the most iconic supermodels of the 1990’s, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer, looking more incredible than ever.

I, for one, am happy to see a fashion campaign featuring women my age. The supermodel era was the one I am most familiar with and the era of my own modeling career, which was defined by models with unique beauty and personalities. They were a household name, appearing on countless magazine covers and advertisements selling a beauty ideal that was as different as each model.  You would never confuse one of these models for another, as you would today.

I am still a fan of the current lovely young models, such as Taylor Hill, Lara Stone, and Lineisy Montero, but it is refreshing to see a wider variety of women of different ages in fashion.  Women over thirty identify better with their own age group and can imagine wearing such fashions when photographed on a model closer to their age, rather than modeled by someone barely into their early twenties.

Women in their forties and fifties today are still fit and in their prime more than ever before, and much less likely to be dictated to, in terms of beauty and style. Just look at the latest Bond girl, or “Bond woman”, Monica Belucci who at 50 is the oldest actress to play such a role to date. These women are inspiring because not only are they still stunningly beautiful, but they are comfortable in their skin. They know what they want and how they want to dress, having found their own personal style.
